These trichomes, part of the plant’s indumentum, are crucial for the plant’s aromatic profile. When handling mint for cocktails, it is essential to preserve these trichomes to maintain the desired flavor profile. Aggressively muddling, blending, or shaking the mint leaves can rupture the cell walls of the plant, releasing bitter compounds such as tannins, which reside within the interior of the leaves.
